History:

Female Representation in the Music Industry

This is Finger Beats at GRLZWKND (3.8.2020) - a showcase highlighting only female rappers, dis, and vocalists.

The music industry has always been a slimy-cut throat industry thriving off the big ego record labels desire for profit over exposing beautiful talent. According to Women in Music, the gender disparity across the world is 70 percent male and 30 percent female representation in the music industry. This statistic is a direct effect of histories ideal for women to be the homemaker, to be subtle, and to be submissive. Art production requires a creative thinking and a subject that women should not project or see. Even in the fine arts, women were not allowed to in art academies or any such apprenticeships. In the 1700's nudist paintings were of highest regard but the female muse was never allowed to lay eyes upon a nude male or recreate his picture as the male so rightfully feels he can do to the woman. This thinking has pervaded into the music industry as female artists are overly exploited, not for their art but for their bodies. A female musician is only successful if she can also sell her body - it is the male idea that people do not buy tickets because of talent but because of looks. Artists like Billie Ellish are breaking down this wall as she only wears baggy clothes as to not see what lay beneath. The female brain has never been admired, but always questioned as being sensitive and aloof, therefore dismissing women as viable candidates for executive decisions or technological work like production or audio engineering.  This website shows how organizations and advocates are breaking down this history and pushing women into all aspects of the industry.
